Coffee shops and Shawlands go together like cans of ‘soop’ and Queens Park. Its become somewhat of a joke that the area has more coffee shops than it can possibly need – and yet, every month there seems to be a new one.
Some stay for a long time, others struggle to maintian a regular customer base, but thats not to say newbies to the scene are doomed to fail – some of the best have only popped up in the last year or so.

There are of course the classics that have stood the test of time (or atleast time since the students started coming over), and despite its reputation, I would actually argue its the weakest area of the Southside for coffee with Strathbungo and Govanhill being the unsung hero of my uncaffeinated mornings.
But if you are looking purely for a new Shawlands morning spot, here’s the ultimate rundown of the best choices in 2025.
1. HUG
Its a classic cafe: No huge thrills or pompous attitude, you can get a full breakfast and a coffee for an affordable price (something not guaranteed in Shawlands). If you are looking for something more… Glasgow Uni, it offers a good selection of syrups and a range of smoothies.

2. The Brooklyn Cafe
Perhaps the most iconic Southside institution. No introduction needed – it has takeaway ice cream and filled rolls, delightful sweet treats and a well equipped day time menu for a more substantial meal.

Okay, maybe a bit of pomp is okay.

4. Cafe Strange Brew
If you’re anything like me, you love to hate it, but really it has stood the test of time (or atleast has survived both pre and post Covid) for good reason – it deserves a spot here.
